• Reading manga in colour is a treat
• I didn't notice the adult themes/humour in the anime, or maybe it was removed in the English version on YTV
• Akira Toriyama is very direct that he is taking the character of Son Goku from the Monkey King (there are little notes on the margins that fill in little details like this)
• The Monkey King is from Journey to the West: a Chinese tale about the Monkey King going west to find the Buddha (or a bodhisattva?)
• The character of the Monkey King was very probably inspired by Hanuman and the myth of vanaras
